Description

Please Do Eat the Daisies: The Comestible Virtues of Non-native Weeds and  Invasives In and Around Lexington with Russ Cohen

Russ Cohen served as the Rivers Advocate for the Mass. Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration, where one of his areas of expertise was in riparian vegetation.  Since his retirement in June 2015, Russ has explored connecting to nature via his taste buds.  Russ sees himself as a Johnny Appleseed for edible native plants, leading foraging walks and talks throughout the Northeast.  He has set up a small nursery in Weston where he grows over 1000 plant species.

Russ’s talk will focus on the non-native weeds and invasive species in our midst.  Lexington is home to hundreds of these plant species.  There is a growing awareness among gardeners of the need to plant more ecologically-valuable native plants to address the decline in native birds and beneficial insects.  What should we do with all those non-native weeds and invasives? The answer could be, for many of them, to eat them.
